A nonprofit organization working to tackle food insecurity. It’s the first location of its kind here in the state and will open this weekend. The Daniel Payne Legacy Goodr Grocery Store will give shoppers access to fresh food in an area where there’s no grocery store within two miles. Shoppers will also have access to those items free or at a reduced charge. The store is a partnership between Goodr, the foundation and Jefferson County. It’s an extension of programming Daniel Payne was already offering to the community. Since it opened in 2021, the foundation has given out 40,000 pre-prepared meals to those in need and expects to hit 50,000 by the end of the year. It wanted to offer community members access to groceries if they can prepare their own meals.“We believe when you have access to getting a whole bag of groceries and a dinner, that simultaneously gives you hope not only for the day, but for the rest of the weeks ahead or the week ahead,” Daniel Payne Legacy Foundation Executive Director Brandon Cleveland said. “For us, the reason why having groceries and having a meal simultaneously is beneficial is because it gives the citizen the opportunity in a short term — in the immediate short term — access to feel encouraged and empowered to keep going.”The store’s grand opening is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Free breakfast and a tour of the store will be offered, but attendees are required to sign up to attend. For more information, click here.
