Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kathryn Marie Gill, 39, was arrested yesterday and charged with a residential burglary, along with two incidents in which she allegedly stole 96 hot dogs, 46 other food items, and a drink from a convenience store.

May 12 – Circle K

At about 10:06 a.m. on May 12, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the Circle K at 4310 SE Hawthorne Road, where the manager said Gill had been inside the store for about three hours the previous evening. She said Gill went into the back room and put “numerous” food items into a trash can, then put a bag of trash on top of the food, took the whole trash can out to the dumpster, and threw the trash away. The manager reported that the food items were found in the trash can a few hours later.

The manager told the deputy that at least six packs of wings, a can of boiled peanuts, 32 Tornados, 96 hot dogs, and seven pizzas were taken from the store, for a total loss of $408.98.

A witness reportedly identified Gill in a photo line-up and said she was a frequent customer of the store.

Gill has previous convictions for retail theft, so she was charged with felony petit theft with two or more prior convictions.

Post Miranda, Gill reportedly denied taking any food from the store or placing it behind the store. She said she simply threw away the trash.

May 20 – residential burglary

At about 5:04 p.m. on May 20, a deputy responded to a home in the McNeil Gardens neighborhood, where the victim said she had come home to find doors standing open and a broken window. The victim said she had been gone for about a week. The victim told the deputy that a Dewalt oscillating tool, some clothing, and a pair of shoes were missing, for a total loss of about $420.

The deputy lifted prints from windows and the dryer, and one led to the identification of Gill as the suspect in the burglary.

Gill was charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure and grand theft from a dwelling.

Post Miranda, Gill reportedly denied entering or trying to enter the home. However, she reportedly later admitted to entering the victim’s shed to wait for the rain to stop.

May 25 – Circle K

On May 25, a deputy responded to a call about shoplifting at the same Circle K on SE Hawthorne Road, where an employee described a woman who had allegedly taken a drink from a cooler and walked out of the store without paying for it.

The deputy, who was familiar with Gill, made contact with her at a camping tent in the woods near the gas station. The deputy reported that Gill was wearing the same clothing as the suspect in the store video. A backpack that was seen in her tent reportedly contained a Four Loko beverage; the cooler where the suspect was seen reportedly had a missing Four Loko can.

Gill has been charged with felony petit theft with two or more previous convictions.

Post Miranda, Gill denied taking the drink. She reportedly said that someone else bought the drink for her and she took it with her into the store, under her shirt.

Gill has five felony convictions (none violent) and five misdemeanor convictions (none violent). Judge Luis Bustamante set bail at $5,000.
